Kilimanjaro
A hut-based Kilimanjaro trek with an acclimatisation day at Horombo and a summit attempt via Gilman’s Point.
Starts Moshi
Marangu · Mandara · Horombo · KiboTHE MARANGU EXPERIENCE
The Marangu Route approaches Kilimanjaro through the mountain's lower forest before continuing into the highland and summit environments. Unlike routes that use mountain camps, Marangu provides hut accommodation at Mandara, Horombo and Kibo.
WHY MARANGU
The Marangu Route offers a different way to experience Kilimanjaro, with overnight stays in mountain huts rather than camping throughout the trek.
The journey begins through the forest before opening into the higher mountain environment around Mandara, Horombo and Kibo.
On the 6-day itinerary, an additional day at Horombo is built into the journey before continuing toward Kibo and the summit. This creates space for the trek to progress through the mountain environments at a steady pace.
ROUTE CHARACTER
Marangu combines hut accommodation with a gradual journey through Kilimanjaro's changing environments, creating a mountain experience with a distinct rhythm.
01
Overnight stays take place in mountain huts along the route, including Mandara, Horombo and Kibo. This gives the trek a different accommodation experience from camping routes.
02
The journey moves from the lower forest into higher mountain environments as the altitude increases toward Kibo and the summit.
03
The 6-day itinerary includes an additional day around Horombo before the climb continues toward Kibo, creating an important part of the mountain journey.
THE JOURNEY
A carefully planned mountain journey moving from the forest into Kilimanjaro's high-altitude environment, with hut accommodation along the route and an acclimatization day at Horombo.
DAY 1
Begin the trek at Marangu Gate and enter the montane forest. The trail gradually climbs through the forest toward Mandara Hut, the first overnight stop on the mountain.
DAY 2
Leave the forest behind as the route continues through higher vegetation and open mountain landscapes toward Horombo Hut, where the group settles for the night.
DAY 3 • ACCLIMATIZATION
Spend an additional day around the Horombo area to support acclimatization before the higher stages of the trek. The day includes an excursion toward the Mawenzi side of the mountain before returning to Horombo Hut.
DAY 4
Continue across the higher mountain landscape toward Kibo Hut. The environment becomes more open and alpine as the route approaches the base of Kibo, preparing for the summit stage.
DAY 5 • SUMMIT DAY
Begin the summit stage from Kibo Hut and continue toward Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro. After the summit section, descend toward Horombo Hut for the night.
DAY 6
Complete the descent through the mountain's changing vegetation toward Marangu Gate. Finish the trek and meet the transfer for the journey back to your accommodation.
Important: The itinerary, hiking times, overnight arrangements and route operations may vary according to weather, mountain conditions, park regulations, safety considerations and group pace. Final arrangements are confirmed with the guide and park authorities before and during the trek.
