WHY LEMOSHO

A gradual journey through changing mountain landscapes.

The Lemosho Route begins on the western side of Kilimanjaro and gradually moves from rainforest into open moorland and the high landscapes of the Shira Plateau.

As the route continues toward the southern circuit, the environment changes again through alpine terrain before the final approach to Barafu and the summit.

The experience is more than reaching Uhuru Peak. It is about moving steadily through different environments, adapting to altitude and experiencing Kilimanjaro as the landscape changes around you.

ROUTE CHARACTER

What makes Lemosho different?

Lemosho combines a remote western approach with changing mountain environments before joining Kilimanjaro's southern circuit toward the summit.

Western approach

Begin on the western side of Kilimanjaro and enter the mountain through quieter forest and highland landscapes before reaching the Shira Plateau.

Shira Plateau

Spend time in the open highlands of the Shira Plateau, where the landscape changes dramatically as the route moves above the forest.

Longer mountain journey

The 8-day itinerary gives the journey more time to move through different environments before the summit attempt and final descent.

THE JOURNEY

Eight days on the Lemosho Route.

Follow a gradual journey from Kilimanjaro's western side, through rainforest and the Shira Plateau, before joining the southern circuit for the summit attempt.

DAY 01

FOREST ZONE

Londorossi Gate → Forest Camp

After completing entry formalities at Londorossi Gate, continue to the Lemosho trailhead and begin the trek through Kilimanjaro's montane forest toward Forest Camp.

DAY 02

MOORLAND

Forest Camp → Shira 1 Camp

Leave the forest behind as the landscape opens into heath and moorland. Continue toward the Shira Plateau and settle into the highland environment around Shira 1.

DAY 03

SHIRA PLATEAU

Shira 1 → Shira 2 → Moir Camp

Explore the open landscapes of the Shira Plateau before continuing toward Moir Camp near the Lent Hills. The day provides time to gain altitude gradually while experiencing one of Kilimanjaro's distinctive highland environments.

DAY 04

ALPINE DESERT

Moir Camp → Lava Tower → Barranco Camp

Continue across the high alpine landscape toward Lava Tower before descending toward Barranco Camp. The route passes through a dramatic change in elevation and terrain as the journey approaches the southern circuit.

DAY 05

SOUTHERN CIRCUIT

Barranco Camp → Karanga Camp

Leave Barranco after breakfast and continue across the Barranco Wall and through the Karanga Valley toward Karanga Camp. The shorter stage allows the journey to continue gaining altitude at a measured pace.

DAY 06

SUMMIT PREPARATION

Karanga Camp → Barafu Camp

Continue upward through the alpine desert toward Barafu Camp. This is the final camp before the summit attempt, where the team prepares for the early start to Uhuru Peak.

DAY 07

SUMMIT DAY

Barafu Camp → Uhuru Peak → Mweka Camp

Begin the summit attempt early and climb toward Uhuru Peak, the highest point of Mount Kilimanjaro. After the summit, descend through the mountain's upper zones toward Mweka Camp for the night.

DAY 08

FINAL DESCENT

Mweka Camp → Mweka Gate

Complete the final descent through the forest toward Mweka Gate. After leaving the mountain, continue with the onward transfer according to your travel arrangements.
