Zanzibar days: your coast, the tides and the reef
Where you stay in Zanzibar makes a real difference to your day. Stone Town, Matemwe and Michamvi serve different excursions, and the tides affect time on the water. Choose your base, then connect the activity, hotel transfer and return journey.

Choose the activity from your actual base
A Stone Town walking tour and a Changuu boat visit connect naturally to the town’s departure area. The Mnemba-waters snorkelling itinerary uses Matemwe-area arrangements. Other coastal activities have their own meeting points and transfer costs.
Share the hotel name rather than just saying ‘Zanzibar.’ Ask whether the guide price includes transport, where you meet and how far the day takes you from your beach stay.
Plan your island day around the tides
Research on Zanzibar sea levels describes predominantly twice-daily high and low tides, with changing tidal ranges. That helps explain why a beach or sandbank can look different across the day. It is not a live forecast.
Your provider must check the tide, wind and sea conditions for the actual date. Ask when a sandbank visit, coastal paddle or snorkelling departure is suitable, and how cancellation or reordering works if conditions are unsafe.
Enjoy the reef without handling it
Green Fins recommends keeping hands and fins clear of coral, avoiding contact with marine animals and not feeding fish. Use a flotation aid or tell your guide if you need support in the water; do not stand on coral to rest.
Photographs of clear water do not establish a swimmer’s comfort or the day’s visibility. Share your swimming experience and equipment needs in advance. A wildlife activity should leave the animals space rather than promising close contact.
Leave room for an island day without a transfer
For a longer stay, balance heritage, spices and forest visits with some open beach time. The seven-day Culture & Coast journey has two Stone Town nights and four coastal nights, with optional boat activities quoted separately.
A slower itinerary can be more useful than collecting every activity name. Choose the experiences you value, then let the coast and conditions determine the practical order.
